SG LIVE ALBUM RELEASE COMING SOON

who?

Producer, composer and keyboard nut Simon Grey’s signature sound blends jazz, polyphonic badness and rich harmonically driven syncopated grooves across a range of sonic landscapes.

Born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, Simon Grey’s musical journey began early. Known for driving his piano teachers (and the parents of fellow students) up the wall, he refused to stick to the notes on the page. Music was always the holy grail — and conformity was never really on the table.

Simon’s early sonic universe was forged during late-night deep dive mixtape sessions with friends, featuring legends like Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, and Joe Zawinul. One mysterious, haunting sound from those tapes refused to leave his head. “What was that oboe-ish thing?” he asked. The answer: an ARP 2600. That moment sparked a lifelong obsession with analog synthesis vintage keyboards and all things polyphonic -  an obsession still far from under control. “It was the point of no return. I had to find that sound. I had to have those boxes.”

From that point on, jazz harmony, synth-based orchestration, Garibaldi-inspired linear grooves, classical and disco textures all became part of Simon’s musical DNA. His approach — always deeply layered, carefully arranged and fiercely self-contained — sees production and performance feeding each other in a cycle of creative energy. “The production feeds the playing and the playing feeds the production,” he says. “They need to co-exist for me as sound is music and vice versa”

Originally a drummer, Simon eventually transitioned to Jazz keyboards and production— but the drummer never really left. After full-time jazz studies, he relocated to Europe in 2005, working with UK soul institution Incognito and The Real People. His unique production style quickly gained attention, leading to remix credits for Jamiroquai, Elton John, and Bootsy Collins, as well as club releases like Galactica Suite and Prophecy. As a player, he’s shared the stage with the NDR Bigband, Deodato, Darryl Jones, and Tony Momrelle.

Never content with comfort zones or doing what is expected of him, Simon started to fuse the worlds of modern gospel and his own brand of broken beat and future Jazz in 2015, taking time away from the session circuit. This led to a bold new chapter: The Pressing Matters’ Sessions, begun in 2018. Eclectic, ambitious, and recorded across multiple continents, the project brings together musical heroes as collaborators and explores uncharted sonic terrain.

Now, Simon is proud to present this new sound to the world in 2025 — the next chapter in a journey that’s only just getting started.
